From Massa Marittima you can reach many spectacular destinations in less than half an hour by car:
1- Saint Galgano Abbey : the gothic roof-less abbey of Saint Galgano and the Montesiepi hermitage which includes the saint’s tomb and the famous rock in the sword. The ruins of Saint Galgano are one of the most visited medieval monuments in Tuscany.
2- Natural Park of Biancane in Monterotondo and the Biolago of Sasso Pisano: The Natural Park of Biancane is part of the Tuscan Mining Geopark (www.turismomonterotondomarittimo.it). You can reach it by car in about 30 minutes. The scenario is characterized by white rocks, pools of boiling water and geysers. The park can be visited autonomously or with a qualified guide. From the park you can also follow a path that leads to the small village of Sasso Pisano. Here it is possible to take a warm bath in the “Biolago”: it is a thermal pool complex with hot phyto-purified water (36°).
The pools are open from May to October.
