Since 1985 the open air opera takes place every year at the beginning of August in Piazza Garibaldi.
The Cathedral and its tower on the background create a suggestive atmosphere for this unique show.
The operas of 2024 will be Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca” on 3 August, directed by Katia Ricciarelli, followed by Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” on 4 August, with the extraordinary participation of actor Michele Placido playing Giovanni Verga, and the grand finale on 5 August with Giacomo Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly“, with director’s notes by Alessandro Cecchi Paone.
This year “Lirica in Piazza” pays tribute to Giacomo Puccini on the centenary of his death (1924/2024), through the performance of two of his great operas. A unique opportunity to commemorate the life and career of one of the most illustrious Italian composers in history.
