From March 15, 2024, to September 15, the San Pietro all’Orto Museum will host an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Stefano di Giovanni, known as Sassetta, an original interpreter of Sienese painting between the Gothic and Renaissance periods. The exhibition was scheduled to close on 14 July, but due to its great success it has been extended until 15 September.
Similar to the exhibition on Lorenzetti, this showcase will revolve around a work already permanently displayed at the San Pietro all’Orto Museum: Sassetta’s Announcing Angel, a small panel that was once placed between the pinnacles of an altarpiece and was restored a few years ago. On this occasion, visitors will have the opportunity to explore other works by the painter, such as small figures of saints and fascinating stories from the National Gallery of Siena and the Chigi Saracini collection. Another Madonna and Child from the Museum of the Opera of Siena, restored by Fai di Siena, will also be exhibited, sharing grace and refined elegance with Molli’s panel. Works by other painters and sculptors close to Sassetta will also be displayed to reconstruct the artistic context of Siena at that time.
Visitors will be guided through the exhibited works to appreciate Sassetta’s refined style, the original function and form of the works, and important aspects related to the commissioning of the paintings through graphic reconstructions and audio traces. The same themes will be explored in specific educational paths designed for students of all grades.
The exhibition, curated by Alessandro Bagnoli, is promoted by the Municipality of Massa Marittima in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Siena – Colle Val d’Elsa – Montalcino, the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Siena, the Diocese of Massa Marittima – Piombino, the National Gallery of Siena, and the Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the Provinces of Siena, Grosseto, and Arezzo.
