From March 22nd to 24th, the Annunciazione New Year will be celebrated in Massa Marittima. The City of “Balestro” will organize an events calendar culminating in a grand historical parade, featuring historical groups from across Tuscany, with the participation of over 1000 participants. It will be a grand celebration for the world of Tuscan historical reenactments. The complete program will be available shortly.
The Annunciazione New Year was introduced by the Regional Council to commemorate the traditional Tuscan New Year, which until 1749 fell on March 25th, the day of the Annunciation. Despite the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, setting the beginning of the year on January 1st, some Tuscan cities like Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Prato, and Siena continued to observe March 25th as their New Year. This commemoration of Tuscan history was introduced by the Regional Council as the “Annunciazione New Year,” a notable event held each year in a different municipality. This initiative aims to support and acknowledge the diverse community, cultural, and social structures throughout the region.
